Maintaining a good level of physical fitness is something that we should all aspire to do. But what does fitness actually entail? What does being physically fit mean?

Simply put, it’s a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity. This means more than just being able to run long distances or lift heavy weights at the gym. Despite being important, each of these attributes only addresses a single area of fitness. Fitness is more than simply a question of listing which activities you do or how long you do them for.

There are five main components of physical fitness:

  1. Cardiorespiratory fitness
  2. Muscular strength
  3. Muscular endurance
  4. Body composition
  5. Flexibility
