PHILLIPA MATENGA

PHILLIPA MATENGA

Fitness Trainer

Biography:

Our ‘young at heart’ teammate, Phillipa, can always be found with a giant smile on her face!  This New Zealand native grew up playing sports but her “social life definitely held her back from committing to more intense training” (editor’s note: this isn’t shocking to us).  However, Phillipa did play volleyball, netball, swimming, and rippa rugby high into ‘interschools’… which sounds intense enough for us.

You can find her around Rep1 leading a yoga stretch class or wearing her giant earphones during her workouts (indie, pop, or country are on the playlists).  Phillipa can also be found with her fitness BFF, Laurey, running the stairs at Wreck, doing a cold dip, or doing handstand videos in the gym!

What is your favorite piece of fitness equipment?
Right now it would be the cable machine. Just something I’m enjoying at the moment as it is easy to change the weight and equipment. I find it offers a lot of variety.

One of your early life accomplishments was?…
Getting my art piece on the front of my school’s work diary (Which was given to all the students that year) or singing in a rock band at school, maybe even doing the hoe down throw down at assembly 😅 – I always hated public speaking/performing growing up so this was a big accomplishment for me then. Fitness wise would be getting into interschools for athletics and swimming (winning medals) or winning rippa rugby competitions in primary with my school team OR maybe it was being able to eat triple my size while growing up and not putting on a pound.

What was your first job? And what did you learn at that job?
The paper run. I learned that my grandma loved me so much she would deliver the paper for me.

What is the one ‘cheat’ food, or drink, that you can’t avoid?
Dairy milk chocolate!!! 1000%

Your favorite Superhero is?…
Spiderman – because I love Tom Holland

What was your favorite toy as a kid?
I had a lot of Bratz dolls with an interest in bow and arrows growing up. You could say I was/am a girly girl with a tom boy side to me. I also loved my push scooter in primary school.. Fun fact: I chipped my front teeth while riding my scooter at my grandma’s house.

Your favorite vacation spot is
Bali. I’ve always loved a summer holiday destination and Bali is right up there as 1 of my favorite locations I’ve travelled to (so far). From the ocean views, to the greenery, to the people and the weather. The cheap accommodation and living costs is always a bonus too. That sounds close enough to luxury for me.
